Don't replace your roof, maintain it!

    That's right, an asphalt roof cleaned by REI will last 5-10 years longer than one that is not. It's kind of like changing the oil in your car but you get the new look to boot.
    The black stains on your roof are caused by a fungus (also known as algae, mold, yeast, etc.) that is common to the Eastern US. On many Triad roofs it has the three essentials it needs to live... warmth, moisture, and food (lime in your shingles) causing it to flourish.
    Treating asphalt roofs for fungus has evolved mostly from pressure washing to chemical treatment over the past decade. It should be noted that the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers of America (ARMA) no longer recommends pressure washing and Owens Corning will not honor their warrantee with this technique due to excessive removal of shingle granules. Most roof cleaning companies have their own "recipes" for cleaning roofs. REI does too, but we have used Steve's extensive background in biochemistry to maximize cleaning efficiency, safety, and environmental protection. Our formula uses sodium hypochlorite to kill the fungus, a detergent to scrub off dead organisms, and a surfactant to stick the entire solution to the roof just long enough to get the job done.
